Hello Everyone,

Here is what we covered today:

Period 2:

1) I handed back the test and the worksheet from last Wednesday.

2) I handed back the "Friendly Letter" writing assignment and informed the students that they need to type up the letter on the computer and print it out for me or give to me on a USB drive. However, a USB drive will be preferable since I could print it out myself with the school's letterhead.

3) I talked about Sensay and told they students that they have a new assignment this week and to complete the past weeks' assignments.

4) I went over the new vocabulary for the new story "The Stormi Giovanni Club".

Week 8 Vocabulary:

1. cavity  (n.)- A cavity is a hollow place in a tooth caused by decay.

2. episode (n.)- one of the single parts into which a story is divided, especially when it is broadcast on the television or radio

3. strict (adj.)- strongly limiting someone's freedom to behave as they wish, or likely to severely punish someone if they do not obey

4. combination (n.)-a set of letters or numbers in a particular order that can be used to open some types of locks

5. demonstrate (v.)- to show or make something clear

6. profile (n)- the amount of public attention and notice that something receives

7. sitcom (n)- a television series in which the same characters are involved in amusing situations in each show

8. reassuring (adj.)- making you feel less worried

9. prevent (v)- to stop something from happening or someone from doing something

10. commercial (n.)- used to refer to radio or television paid for by advertisements that are broadcast between and during programs

11. solve (v.)- to find an answer to a problem

12. setting (n.)- the time and the place in which the action of a book, film, play, etc. happens:

13. off-stage (n.)- behind, at, or to the side of the stage, so that people who are watching cannot see

14. frown (v)- to bring your eyebrows together so that there are lines on your face above your eyes, often while turning the corners of your mouth downwards, showing that you are annoyed, worried, sad, or thinking hard

15. due (v.)- expected to hand in, happen, arrive, etc. at a particular time

16. coal (n.)- a piece of wood or coal, etc. that continues to burn after a fire has no more flames

17. poet (n.)- a person who writes a poem

18. a happy camper (phrase)- someone who is happy with their situation

19. professor (n.)- a teacher of the highest rank in a department of a British university, or a teacher of high rank in an American university or college

20. philosophy (n.)- the use of reason in understanding such things as the nature of the real world and existence, the use and limits of knowledge, and the principles of moral judgment

21. figure out (v.)- to understand or solve something

22. distressed (adj.)- upset or worried

23. digress (v.)- to move away from the main subject you are writing or talking about and to write or talk about something else

24. topic (n.)- a subject that is discussed, written about, or studied

25. for the birds (phrase)- stupid or not important

26. homeroom (n.)- a room in a school where members of a particular group of students go for their teacher to record that they are present, usually at the beginning of the day

27. go online (v.)- to go on the internet

28. FYI (abbreviation)- for your information: used, for example in emails, when you send someone an announcement or tell someone something that you think they should know

29. roller ball (n.)- a pen which uses ball point writing mechanisms with water-based liquid or gelled ink

30. ballpoint  (n.)- a pen with a small metal ball at the end that puts ink on the paper

Homework: 

1) Vocabulary #1-10 x4, definition x1

2) Students should type up the "Friendly Letter" on a computer and hand it to me on a USB drive by this Thursday, October 17.
