Here's what we covered in class:

Class Period 2

Introduced Week 16 "The Unsinkable Wreck of the RMS Titanic" Vocabulary:

1. fatally (adv.)-in a way that causes death

2. graze (v.)- to touch and rub against something while passing it, causing slight damage

3. doomed (adj.)- certain to fail, die, or be destroyed

4. stern (n.)- the back part of a ship or boat

5. davit (n.)- A small crane that projects over the side of a ship and is used to hoist boats, anchors, and cargo

6. bow (n.)- the front part of a ship

7. stateroom (n.)- a room where you sleep on a cruise ship (= a large ship like a hotel)

8. dome (n.)- a rounded roof on a building or a room, or a building with such a roof

9. explore (v.)- to search and discover

10. staircase (n.)- a set of stairs inside a building, usually with a bar fixed on the wall or onto vertical poles at the side for you to hold on to

11. eyeball (n.)- the whole eye, including the part that cannot usually be seen

12. subdecking (n.)- the under section of the deck of a ship

13. contort (v.)- to (cause something to) twist or bend violently and unnaturally into a different shape or form

14. tangle (n.)- an untidy mass of things that are not in a state of order, or a state of confusion or difficulty

15. object (n.)- a thing that you can see or touch but that is not usually a living animal, plant, or person

16. Cost him his life (phrase)- to cause someone to lose or destroy their life

17. rouse (v.)- to wake someone up or make someone more active or excited

18. lifebelt (n.)- a piece of equipment, usually a ring filled with air or light material that floats, designed to help you float if you fall into water

19. swirl (v.)- to move quickly with a twisting, circular movement, or to make something do this

20. panicking (adj.)-  of the nature of, caused by, or indicating a sudden overwhelming fear that produces hysterical behavior and that can spread quickly through a crowd

21. officer (n.)- a person who has a position of authority in an organization

22. crewman (n.)- a member of a group of people who work together, especially on a ship

23. insist (v.)- to say firmly or demand forcefully, especially when others disagree with or oppose what you say

24. refuse (v.)- to say that you will not do or accept something

25. prevail (v.)- to get control or influence

26. boiler (n.)- the part of a steam engine where water is heated to provide power

27. upright (adj.)- straight up or vertical

28. champagne (n.)- an expensive white or pink fizzy (= with bubbles) wine made in the Champagne area of Eastern France. Champagne is often drunk to celebrate something:

29. porcelain (n.)- a hard but delicate, shiny, white substance made by heating a special type of clay to a high temperature, used to make cups, plates, decorations, etc.

30. final resting place (phrase)- the location where a body is interred after death
